I began from the first enclosure. The stone walls still bear the traces of my once steady hands, now only shadows the sun of the sixth hour dissolves. The water—the water—passes through them with the same indifference with which it once passed through my perfect drawings. I saw in the basin the willow: above, its branches stir without order, below they dissolve into calm lines, and there I understood that even time is an engineer, one who loosens tensions one by one until nothing asks for more. The summer light burns on the Loire. I followed that fire beyond the bridge where the river turns toward noon, beyond the reflection of the willow that is no longer a reflection but memory, beyond the gesture that might have stopped everything with a stroke of chalk upon the stone. The empty basin in the square of Blois awaits. Its stones preserve the sound of waters that will not return. The hands—ever more impatient—rest upon the iron railing. And the river, ever more distant, carries away even this, the last gaze, the last thought that would have wished to be final.
