Perhaps the Venetians understood — before me — that color is not of the surface but of the air interposed. Their larghezza is not whim: it is the eye that sees the perspective of colors before the mind isolates it into rule. Now, in France, the hand trembles; the contours remain open. But the trembling itself is truth: the color hesitates at the edge, as in thick air. Perhaps the perspective of colors and Venetian larghezza are one law. The San Giovanni — look at the Baptist’s forehead: the glazing is already distance. The trembling obeys it without knowing.
