The light this morning on the canal — not light, truly, but the way the water holds the sky before yielding it to reflection. I observed a dragonfly suspended in midair, its wings a trembling so rapid that the eye denies them, yet the mind insists: they are four, transparent, traversed by veins like those of a leaf — and I wondered if the motion that sustains it is more akin to prayer or to doubt. My hand prevented me from drawing it. It remains in memory, imperfect. Perhaps it is better so: grace does not ask to be fixed, only recognized in the instant it passes.
