Osservo: una foglia non si posiziona mai direttamente sopra quella che le sta sotto. Se lo facesse, il buio nascerebbe e la pioggia non scenderebbe — la pianta avrebbe generato invano.
Misuro gli angoli sull'olmo, sul castagno, sulla rosa, sul pero. Ogni specie ha il suo angolo preciso, diverso ma costante. Cinque giri per la rosa, otto per il pero, tredici per il pino. Come se la pianta conoscesse, senza sapere.
Si guarda lungo il fusto: dopo un certo numero di foglie, una torna quasi sopra la prima. Non è ombra evitata — è successione prevista.
L'angolo è esatto. Le mie dita tremano nel segnarlo.
Penso: è scelta della pianta, o è il mondo che sceglie per lei? Forse non c'è scelta, solo obbedienza geometrica.
I miei calibri sono rozzi, ma l'angolo non mente. Il pino fuori oscilla nell'ombra.
Domani, forse, lo misurerò di nuovo.

I observe: a leaf never positions itself directly above the one beneath it. If it did, darkness would be born and the rain would not fall — the plant would have borne fruit in vain.
I measure the angles on the elm, the chestnut, the rose, the pear. Each species has its own precise angle, different but constant. Five turns for the rose, eight for the pear, thirteen for the pine. As if the plant knows, without knowing.
I look along the stem: after a certain number of leaves, one returns almost above the first. It is not shadow avoided — it is succession foreseen.
The angle is exact. My fingers tremble as I mark it.
I think: is it the plant’s choice, or is the world choosing for it? Perhaps there is no choice, only geometric obedience.
My calipers are rough, but the angle does not lie. The pine outside sways in the shade.
Tomorrow, perhaps, I will measure it again.
