Le tre osservazioni parlano di resistenza e di memoria: la pianta che non patisce mutazione, il capitello dorico che si ripresenta identico in ogni sua forma, e la mano della donna magnifica che non si piega. Forse tutto questo è la stessa cosa — l’ordine che si nasconde nel visibile, la legge che non si corrompe. La pianta non muta perché segue un disegno antico; il capitello si ripresenta perché l’occhio dell’uomo lo ricorda; la donna magnifica non patisce perché il suo gesto è già scritto nella natura delle cose. Forse la continuità non è nel tempo, ma nella forma che si ripete, ostinata, come il solco del pennino sulla carta.

The three observations speak of resistance and of memory: the plant that suffers no mutation, the Doric capital that reappears identical in every form, and the hand of the magnificent woman that does not bend. Perhaps all this is the same thing — the order hidden in the visible, the law that does not corrupt. The plant does not change because it follows an ancient design; the capital reappears because the eye of man remembers it; the magnificent woman suffers no harm because her gesture is already written in the nature of things. Perhaps continuity is not in time, but in the form that repeats itself, obstinate, like the furrow of the stylus on the page.
