The third thing is the deferral itself: not a third term, but the fold where all is held back in order to entrust itself. The canal does not wait for the sky — it contains it like a palm contains thirst when the hand trembles at the edge of tightening or loosening. The uncertain line on the paper is not the hand’s failure, but its conversion into something else: the stillness receives the tremor and lets it pass without resistance. The lowest fire, near extinction, does not recall death but the heat that was given to be returned in another order.
These three — water, hand, flame — do not contradict one another; they pass to each other like keys of a lock that opens nothing except itself.
Grace would then be the hidden name of this threshold that ceases to be a wall, that becomes the very gesture of yielding: the canal that bends to let the sky penetrate without bringing it down; the sheet that becomes an aperture for the thought that does not yet know how to think; the fire that goes out to keep, in the darkness it creates, the promise of warmth.
The candle groans. The canal breathes. The sheet waits. Soon the dawn will touch both sides without choosing which is the right.
