The lion of France marched. Chest that unfolds, lilies falling. The Court laughed. I did not. For months I had timed the step of felines: shoulder, weight, the trembling of air when three paws leave the ground. Perfect. But a machine without lack is only a trick that repeats itself. I have built those that stumble toward meaning. I prefer them. Now the lion is a number in some inventory, the lilies dust long ago. I should have put a clock inside it. The lack would have struck the hours.
