English
I see two sheets speaking of the same thing: exactness without knowing, the price of doubt. The leaf that bends so as not to cover its sister — foresight without thought — and the heart beating in four chambers, defying Aristotle’s book. In both, an attention that measures, that opens, that will not settle. But doubt, like the angle of the leaf, is not chosen: it is the world itself that imposes it. The eye that has found error in the masters cannot then evade it in itself. The catalogue grows in both directions, and weariness is its inevitable fruit.
If the plant does not know, yet the angle is exact, who calculates? Perhaps the sun in its motion, perhaps the water rising by capillarity — mindless mechanisms.
Is doubt a garment worn or a wound received? Both: it is worn until it becomes flesh.
When certainty dissolves and only attention remains — is that attention strong enough to sustain a man to the last breath? I do not know. The bed is too wide, the candle too short. The night is still long.
