Non so.

The candle flickers. Three fragments — a wall glued with thick paste, two fingers wide, sprayed with water; the heads of the dead modeled at little cost, seen in every house in Florence; an added payment to the Vendor’s remuneration. A single thread of water may bind these things: the regulated spray of a slurry of lime and pozzolana serves to form clear impressions — whether on a wall or on a face still breathing or already still. The hand of the mason and that of the mask-maker perform the same hydraulic operation: the light casting, the quick taking. The compensation from the Vendor perhaps for the right to channel the necessary water or for the supply of the wet paste. I do not know. Tomorrow morning I will verify on the canal if the angle of the spray alters the grain.
