Music is time that is heard; painting is time that stops at a point. Yet these three notes — Niccolò da Tolentino on horseback, the difference and similitude of painting with poetry, and painting with poetry — seem to me but a single examination: how art renders motion. The horseman is arrested motion, the eye would continue it and cannot; poetry is motion that the mind continues by succession; painting denies the before and the after and compels all time into a single glance. I suspect that what unites them is not the material but the proportion of motion: the same harmony that in music unfolds in time, in painting concentrates in simultaneity, and in poetry feigns succession to describe a figure. If in these leaves the three notes treated of separate things — the horse as anatomy alone, poetry as grammar alone, painting as color alone — then the hypothesis would fall.
