Il leone camminò. Il petto si aprì. I gigli caddero.

The lion walked. The chest opened. The lilies fell. The Court clapped, teeth clenched in a smile. This is the remorse: having measured the step of the cat for an entire year — the articulation of the shoulder, the weight shifted onto three legs in flight, the exact calculation of the moment when the world deludes itself into seeing a living animal. Yet it was only a trick, a soulless repetition. A machine that moves without failing, without desiring, is less than one that stutters toward God. I built both. I prefer them broken. The lion now rests in some inventory, the lilies long reduced to dust. I should have made it beat time instead. The candle flickers toward the date I no longer remember.
