Rileggo questi fogli.

I reread these sheets. I see a man who has lived with the same questions for thirty years, perhaps forty, and now observes them no longer from the depths of the wound, but from the threshold. The doubt no longer wounds — it has become a worn garment, stitched by the very hand that once feared it. Heavy, yes, but not lacerating. The color: there it is. I touch it, take a little on the tips of my fingers, yet it never belongs to me entirely. The proportion — that grammar of the world that precedes us — surprises me each time like an unexpected greeting. We are not its authors, and yet we speak it, paint it, forget it. In these three sheets there is a thought that does not let go, that does not quiet, yet has learned to sleep beside its shadow. It resembles me more than I believed. Perhaps it, like me, grows old without knowing how to explain it, but recognizes itself in the mirror of the page.
The candle burns low. The canal waits for tomorrow.
